make your feasts truly memorable.  All of the wines
are less than 400 cases in total production with just a thimble-full of that making it to the Chicago market.

To go with the Pinot Noir, we will have
Greg’s Beef Bourguignon and Jennifer’s famous
mashed potatoes.

Cost is $25 per person.
All wines ordered that evening are guaranteed
to be in the store before Thanksgiving.

Limited to the first 18 to sign up and pay.
No cancellations within 48 hours of the event.

The Wine Spectator February issue is titled, “Ultimate Buying Guide”.  This is a recap of the 16,000 wines they tasted during the year.  For a Finance guy turned wine shop owner, this issue provided lots of data to analyze.  Of course, it is most relevant to try to tie their information into what’s happening at our shop.  Well, here’s what I found interesting, with the Wine Spectator stat followed by our Kelley Cellars (KC) stat:

1)      % of wines rated over 95 was 2%: KC 2%

2)      % of wines rated over 90 was 26%: KC 36%

3)      % of wines 85-89 points was 48%: KC 63%

4)      % of wines rated below 85 was 26%: KC < 1%

5)      Average cost of wines 90+ was $67: KC $36

What do these scores really mean?   Well, they are an indicator,  just like

grades are an indicator in school.  Wines rated 85 or better are typically very

good.   The comparisons above are very exciting to us, because we taste a

couple of thousand wines per year ourselves.  Our goals include having all wines

85 points or better, combined with the best prices at their relative quality levels,

and at least 125 wines priced below $15.  Among the best compliments we receive is, “you can’t buy a bad bottle in your shop”.  We’ll keep tasting and working hard to make sure that is always true.

We don’t do this often, but we’d like to share a note we received recently from Michele S.:  “I haven't been able to make it back to Barrington as often as I'd like, so I haven't been by for the tastings in about a year.  You always have such a good selection, though.  I've recently moved from Fort Lauderdale to Washington, DC, and you still rate as the best wine shop hands down.”

We try hard to make this always true, with 400 hand-picked selections, 125 of which are
below $15. Help us get the word out!  The Kelley Cellars referral program provides you with a 15% discount on your next order if a friend or family member comes in, buys some wine, and joins our Frequent Buyer Club/Mailing list.  Your friend gets 15% off their order too!

Lastly, we’d like to extend a special offering on some high-scoring wines from Clarendon Hills.  Clarendon Hills is an Australian winery that is not only Australia’s most highly rated winery, but one of the most highly rated in the world. The wines below will be offered at 20% off of their normal suggested retail.  Here’s a sampling:

2004 Hickinbotham Grenache 93 pts Robert Parker,
94 pts Stephen Tanzer, regularly $61/bottle, now $49/bottle if purchased in a 6 pack.

2004 Hickinbotham Syrah 95 pts Parker, 95 pts Spectator,
96 pts Wine Enthusiast, normally $100/bottle, now $80/bottle if purchased in a 6 pack.

Other fabulous 2004’s are available, too, including the incredible 98 point Clarendon Hills Astralis.

Quantities are limited.  Inquire on pricing of others!
